Buy from a known seller, check the bar shows the hallmark, maker, weight and purity, ask for a detailed invoice, and work out the premium: divide the price by the weight and compare it with today's 24K price of 467.27 SAR per gram. Bars of 99% purity or higher are zero-rated for VAT. Note that small bars cost more per gram than large ones.
How do I buy a gold bar safely in Saudi Arabia?

The steps
- Choose a weight. Think about the amount and how easily you could sell, not only the price.
- Check today's price before you leave home.
- Compare the price per gram at two or three sellers, for the same weight and maker.
- Inspect the bar: hallmark, maker, weight, purity and any serial number.
- Confirm the VAT: it should be 0% at 99% purity or above.
- Take the invoice showing weight, purity and price.
- Pay and collect in the same sitting. Don't pay against a promise of later delivery. See what scholars say.
What is the real premium?
These are two Saudi stores' prices as shown on 1 November 2026. For comparison, our 24K price that day was SAR 467.27 per gram, after falling 3.6% from the day before.
| Bar | Store | Price (SAR) | Per gram (SAR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 g | Faris | 2,713 | 542.60 |
| 10 g | Faris | 5,195 | 519.50 |
| Half ounce (15.55 g) | Al Saab | 7,893 | 507.59 |
| 1 ounce (31.10 g) | Faris | 15,831 | 508.98 |
Two things stand out. Weight matters: a gram in a 5 g bar cost about 6.6% more than in a 1 oz bar at the same store. Premiums can be larger than you'd expect: between 8.6% and 16.1% over the market price that day. Part of that may be stores updating more slowly than the market fell, so compare with the live price, not yesterday's.
That is also above Dhahabi's general 3.5% estimate for bars, so treat 4,836.23 SAR as a rough floor for a 10 g bar, not a price you will find in every store.
Which weight?
Investopedia gives a clear example: ten 1 oz bars are easier to sell than one 10 oz bar, because you can sell part of your holding. But small bars carry bigger premiums, as the table shows.
- Very small (1 to 5 g): easy to start with, dearest per gram.
- Medium (10 g to 1 oz): a balance between premium and flexibility.
- Large: the lowest premium, but you sell it all at once.
Purity and VAT
Article 36 of the VAT Implementing Regulations treats metal as supplied for investment if its purity is at least 99% and it trades on the global bullion market. A 24K bar is therefore zero-rated. A 21K or 22K "bar" isn't.
The maker
Investopedia advises buying only bars stamped with the maker's name, weight and purity. The global reference for refiners is the LBMA Good Delivery List. If the name isn't clear, ask the shop which refiner made it.
Signs of fraud
Investopedia lists the common scams. The most relevant here:
- Plated bars over cheap metal, or false purity and weight.
- Forged certificates. Check that the number on the certificate matches the bar.
- Fake online stores priced clearly below the market.
- Social media offers and "ends today" pressure.
- "Pay now, collect next week" from nobody you can identify.
The law helps you here. Article 4 of the Precious Metals and Gemstones Law bans selling or displaying precious metal bars and items that don't carry the Kingdom's hallmark. If you doubt a seller, contact the Ministry of Commerce on 1900.
After you buy
- Keep the invoice and box. They help when you sell.
- Plan for storage and insurance before you buy, since gold pays no income to cover them.
- Zakat: a bar held as savings counts towards zakat on gold.
