Quick conversion table

Unit In grams Price today (pure gold)
1 gram 1 467.27 SAR
1 tola 11.6638 5,450.13 SAR
1 troy ounce 31.1035 14,533.68 SAR
1 kilo 1,000

And the other way round:

From Equals
100 grams 3.2151 ounces (100 ÷ 31.1035)
100 grams 8.5735 tolas (100 ÷ 11.6638)
10 tolas 116.64 grams

The ounce: the unit of the world price

The ounce in the news ("gold has reached such-and-such a price in dollars") is the troy ounce, not the ordinary ounce. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) sets it in its precious metals conversion table at 31.103 476 8 grams, and says "Multiply the price per gram by 31.103 476 8" to turn a price per gram into a price per ounce.

Example: from the dollar price per ounce to the riyal price per gram

On 22 October 2026 an ounce was $4,085.66, according to Trading Economics:

Step Calculation Result
Price per gram in dollars 4,085.66 ÷ 31.1035 $131.36 (rounded)
Price per gram in riyals 4,085.66 ÷ 31.1035 × 3.75 492.59 SAR

That is the price of a gram of pure gold (24K). The 3.75 is the riyal's peg to the dollar, which the Saudi Central Bank says it is committed to "at the official rate of 3.75 riyals to the dollar". Each karat then follows its share: 21K = the 24K price × 21 ÷ 24.

The tola: common among Asian communities

The tola is an old South Asian unit, known in India and Pakistan and at some bullion shops in the Gulf. Its standard weight is 180 grains, which is 3/8 of a troy ounce = 11.6638 grams. So if a shop offers you a 10-tola bar, it weighs 116.64 grams, and the gold in it is worth 54,502.20 SAR today.

Why does converting matter?

  1. You understand the news: when you hear "the ounce rose by $50", you know a gram of 24K went up by about 50 ÷ 31.1035 × 3.75 = 6.03 SAR.
  2. You can compare bars: if one bar is sold in tolas and another in grams, convert both to grams before comparing.
  3. The unit can't catch you out: always ask "is that price per gram or per tola?" before comparing two offers.

Prices per gram for every karat are on today's gold prices, and the value of any weight is in the gold calculator.
