Is gold a good investment? What a Saudi buyer should know

Gold can preserve part of your savings over the long term, but it isn't a guaranteed investment. It pays no interest or dividends, your only return is a rising price, and that price sometimes falls hard. Gold reached $5,344 an ounce in January 2026, about SAR 20,041, and today an ounce is 14,533.68 SAR. So the answer depends on your goal and how long you can hold. This is general information, not investment advice.

Why people buy gold

  • A store of value: Investopedia ties its value to its acceptance as a store of value, its limited supply and its reputation as an inflation hedge.
  • In a crisis: demand tends to rise during uncertainty, though gold hasn't held up in every crisis.
  • Diversification: many advisers treat it as one part of a portfolio, not the whole of it.
  • Easy to sell: in Saudi Arabia, gold shops buy it close to the market price. Today a shop pays about 403.86 SAR per gram for used 21K (our estimate).

What to know first

1. There is no income. Gold pays no interest or dividends, so your return comes only from the price.

2. The result depends on the period. From 1990 to 2020 gold rose about 360% while the Dow Jones rose 1,081%. Yet from 2000 to the mid-2020s, gold beat the S&P 500. Those are US indices, but the lesson travels: when you buy changes everything.

3. The price falls. Anyone who bought at the January 2026 peak paid about SAR 20,041 an ounce, against 14,533.68 SAR today. The usual causes are a strong dollar, rising interest rates and renewed appetite for stocks.

4. Buying and selling cost money. This is the point buyers forget most often:

If you bought today Cost to buy A shop would pay about
10 g 24K bar 4,836.23 SAR 4,622.69 SAR
10 g of 21K at SAR 30 making 5,046.89 SAR 4,038.60 SAR

So the price has to rise before you are back where you started. These are estimates, and real bar premiums can be higher, especially on small bars.

5. Zakat and storage. Gold held as savings carries 2.5% zakat each Hijri year once it reaches the nisab: on 100 g of 21K that is 1,022.15 SAR today. Investopedia also counts storage and insurance among the costs.

Saving or investing?

The difference matters. Saving means protecting a sum for years; investing means growing it. Gold is closer to the first. Investopedia puts it another way: part of a diversified strategy, not a stand-alone investment.

What are people in Saudi Arabia doing?

World Gold Council data reported by Argaam shows Saudi jewellery demand fell to 12.7 tonnes in Q1 2026 from 14.6 tonnes a year earlier, while bar and coin demand rose to 5.1 tonnes from 4.4. That describes what happened; it doesn't prove the decision was right.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Can I leave this money for years, or might I need it soon?
  • Could I watch its value fall without selling?
  • What is my gain after the making charge, resale margin and zakat?
  • Am I buying gold, or buying jewellery and calling it an investment?

Frequently asked questions

Is gold a good investment?

It can preserve part of your savings over a long period, but it pays no income, its price falls, and buying and selling cost money. It depends on your goal and timescale.

Is gold a safe investment?

Not in the sense of being guaranteed. Its price moves daily, and it fell after the January 2026 peak. It is a well-known asset that is easy to sell, which isn't the same as a price that can't drop.

Is gold better than stocks?

It depends on the period. Over very long spans US stocks have generally done better; in stretches such as 2000 to the mid-2020s, gold did.

How much of my savings should be in gold?

We can't give you a percentage, because it depends on your situation. For personal advice, speak to a financial adviser licensed by the Capital Market Authority.
