It depends on the platform. Before you transfer anything, check the firm appears on the Capital Market Authority's list of capital market institutions. The CMA also publishes a list of unlicensed firms, and says it doesn't cover all of them. Much of what apps call "gold trading" is contracts for difference (CFDs): you own no gold, you bet on the price, and usually with leverage. That's different from buying gold, it carries real financial risk, and scholars have views on it too.

"Gold trading" can mean three things
| What's offered | What you own | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Physical gold | A bar or piece in your hand | The shop, invoice and hallmark |
| A licensed gold fund | Units in a fund | The CMA's licensed funds list |
| A CFD | A contract on a price difference, no gold | The firm's licence and the contract terms |
We cover funds in how to invest in gold without holding it. This page is about the third.
What is a CFD?
You agree with the platform on the difference in the gold price between opening and closing a trade. No gold reaches you. Investopedia notes that gold CFDs are available on most online platforms, typically under the symbol XAU.
The problem is leverage. As a worked example, if you open a SAR 10,000 position with SAR 1,000 of your own money (10× leverage), a 5% price fall costs you SAR 500, half your money, while someone who owned the gold outright is down 5% on paper. A 10% fall wipes out your stake before fees. Gold can move more than 3% in a day: on 1 November 2026 our gram price fell 3.62%.
Signs of a scam
The Permanent Committee for Awareness and Warning, chaired by the CMA, warned in 2020 about parties dealing in foreign currency, and listed their methods:
- Using the logos of government bodies and known companies.
- Publishing false statements attributed to officials and public figures.
- Misleading reports and headlines with officials' photos and newspaper logos.
- Paid promotion and influencers on social media.
That warning was about currencies, but the same playbook works for gold offers. Also watch for:
- A promise of fixed or guaranteed profit.
- An "account manager" who contacts you on WhatsApp or Telegram.
- A request to transfer to a personal account or one outside Saudi Arabia.
- Small withdrawals allowed at first, followed by a request for more money.
How to check
- Open the CMA's site yourself, not from a link someone sent: capital market institutions.
- Match the name exactly, as some firms copy real names.
- Check the list of unlicensed firms, remembering the CMA says it isn't complete.
- If a firm isn't licensed: don't transfer, and report it.
- If you have been defrauded: file a report with the CMA and contact your bank at once.
What scholars say
We don't issue rulings. We quote the texts with their sources; ask a scholar about your case.
- Gold CFDs: IslamQA said in December 2025 that speculating on the gold price through CFDs isn't permitted.
- Margin trading: the Dorar Fiqh Encyclopedia reports that currency exchange on margin isn't permitted, citing a resolution of the Muslim World League's Islamic Fiqh Academy.
- Hand to hand: Sheikh Ibn Baz required gold sales to be hand to hand.
On buying and selling physical gold hand to hand, Sheikh Ibn Baz said there was no objection to it.
If you just want the gold price
There are clear routes without leverage: a bar or a licensed fund. Compare them in the four ways to invest.
