In Saudi Arabia, dollars and riyals are almost the same decision, because the riyal is pegged to the dollar at 3.75. The real question is cash or gold? Cash holds its riyal value and erodes slowly: Saudi inflation was 1.9% in September 2026. Gold can beat inflation, but it can also fall hard: an ounce dropped from $5,344 in January 2026 to about $4,001 on 23 October, or 25%. This is general information, not investment advice.
Should I save in gold or dollars? Does gold protect against inflation?

Why dollars and riyals are the same here
The Saudi Central Bank is committed to 3.75 riyals to the dollar. Turn SAR 37,500 into $10,000 and the riyal value of your savings doesn't change; you just pay the exchange spread. So moving into dollars gives little real diversification to someone who spends in riyals.
Gold itself is priced worldwide in dollars, so any move in the ounce price feeds straight into the riyal gram price.
What inflation does to savings
According to General Authority for Statistics data reported by Argaam, Saudi annual inflation was 1.9% in September 2026, against 2.2% in September 2025.
In numbers: SAR 100,000 in cash stays the same figure, but at 1.9% inflation you need SAR 101,900 a year later to buy the same things. That is about SAR 1,900 of buying power a year. It's slow, but it adds up.
Does gold protect against inflation?
Sometimes, and not reliably. Investopedia says gold is widely seen as an inflation hedge but may not be the best option for that, as many investors overlook its volatility, its opportunity cost and the logistics of storage. It adds that rising prices tend to draw people in near the peak.
| Cash (riyals or dollars) | Gold | |
|---|---|---|
| Riyal value | Fixed | Moves daily |
| Against 1.9% inflation | Slowly loses buying power | Can run well ahead or well behind |
| Worst recent stretch | No change in the figure | Down about 25% in nine months of 2026 |
| Cost to enter and leave | A small exchange spread, if you convert | Buy and sell margins |
| Income | Depends on the account | None |
| Zakat | Due once it reaches the nisab | Due once it reaches the nisab |
Over a short period, then, gold's risk is far larger than inflation's. Inflation took about 1.9% in a year; gold moved 25% in under a year. Gold suits long-term aims, not money you need soon.
What about sukuk?
Investopedia's gold-versus-Treasuries comparison doesn't apply directly here, but the idea does: an instrument with an expected return in exchange for less excitement. Saudi Arabia has sukuk products, such as the Albilad Saudi Sovereign Sukuk ETF among Albilad's funds. We don't compare their returns or recommend them; the point is that the choice isn't only gold or cash.
How to think about the sum
- Need it within a year or two? A gold fall could hurt just when you need the money.
- Emergency fund? It has to be easy to reach, and selling gold has a margin.
- Long-term savings? This is where gold starts to make sense, as a part rather than the whole.
- Worried about the riyal? The dollar peg is a stated policy that the central bank reaffirms.
If you decide on gold, buying in stages reduces the effect of timing, and the four ways to invest compares costs. Today an ounce is 14,533.68 SAR.

Frequently asked questions
Is it better to save in gold or dollars?
It depends on how long. In Saudi Arabia the dollar is close to the riyal because of the peg. Gold suits longer periods better, because it swings so much.
Does gold protect against inflation?
It's a well-known hedge, but not a guaranteed one. It can fall much further than inflation takes in a year.
What is inflation in Saudi Arabia?
1.9% a year in September 2026, according to the General Authority for Statistics.
Should I move my savings from riyals to dollars?
With the riyal pegged at 3.75, converting doesn't change their riyal value, and you pay the spread. It's limited diversification if you spend in riyals.
