The gold price is set worldwide in dollars per ounce, and it moves with the dollar, interest rates, central bank buying and crises. The riyal is pegged to the dollar at 3.75, so any move in the world price passes straight through to the price per gram in Saudi Arabia. For example, on 22 October 2026 an ounce was $4,085.66, down 4.71% on a month earlier according to Trading Economics, and central banks had bought 170 tonnes of gold since the start of 2026 according to the World Gold Council. Today a gram of 24K is 467.27 SAR and 21K is 408.86 SAR.
Why does the gold price go up or down?

Where does the price you see come from?
The world price is set in the big markets:
- The LBMA price in London: the global reference for gold, set twice a day in an auction starting at 10:30 and 15:00 London time, and run by ICE Benchmark Administration.
- COMEX gold futures: these trade throughout the day, and you can follow them on Yahoo Finance (GC=F).
After that, converting to riyals is simple: ounce price ÷ 31.1035 × 3.75 = the price per gram of 24K. It is explained in How many grams are in an ounce and a tola?
Why doesn't the riyal change the picture?
Because the Saudi Central Bank is committed to a fixed peg: "maintaining the exchange rate at the official rate of 3.75 riyals to the dollar". So if the ounce rises by $50, a gram of 24K rises by about 6.03 SAR (50 ÷ 31.1035 × 3.75), and 21K by about 5.28 SAR (6.03 × 87.5%).
The factors that move the price
1. The US dollar
Gold is priced in dollars. When the dollar weakens, gold becomes cheaper for people buying in other currencies, so demand rises and the price usually goes up. The reverse is also true.
2. Interest rates
Gold pays no interest. When rates rise, deposits and bonds become more attractive and gold comes under pressure. When the US Federal Reserve cuts rates or hints at a cut, gold usually benefits.
3. Central bank buying
Many central banks are adding to their gold reserves. According to the World Gold Council (6 October 2026):
"Global central banks remain on pace with gold accumulation this August, with reported net buying totalling 39t"
That is net buying of 39 tonnes in August 2026 alone and 170 tonnes since the start of the year, with China the largest buyer, followed by Uzbekistan and Poland. This is substantial demand, and it supports the price over the medium term.
4. Crises and uncertainty
At times of political tension or economic worry, many investors move part of their money into gold as a safe haven, which raises demand and the price.
5. Jewellery demand
A large part of demand comes from the jewellery industry, especially in India, China and the Gulf, and it changes with the seasons. This adds volatility on top of the bigger factors.
Why does gold sometimes fall hard?
Gold doesn't rise in a straight line. Investopedia lists the usual causes of a fall: excess supply over demand, a shift in investor sentiment, a strong dollar, rising interest rates, low inflation, and a healthy economy that makes stocks more attractive. A recent example: an ounce reached $5,344 in January 2026, then stood at about $4,001 on 23 October, a fall of about 25% in under a year.
Can I predict the movement?
There is no guaranteed way. The factors are linked and keep changing: the ounce fell 4.71% in a single month, yet it was only 0.98% lower than at the same time the year before. That is why it is better to follow the price regularly than to try to catch the right moment. The practical idea is in When should I buy gold?
Why does this matter to you as a buyer?
- You understand that a change in the price from one day to the next is not the shop playing games. It is the world market.
- You know that what really differs between shops is the making charge, not the gold price.
- You can read a "gold has gone up" headline and know what it means in riyals per gram.
