Where should I keep my gold? At home or in a bank box

You have two main options: a safe at home, with no rent but the risk is yours, or a bank safe deposit box, which is more secure but has an annual rent and limited access. Saudi National Bank's 2024 tariff lists SAR 500 to 1,000 a year depending on size. Before you decide, ask two things: is the gold insured, and how often do you need to reach it? Above all, keep invoices and photos of your pieces somewhere apart from the gold.

What does a bank box cost?

Saudi National Bank's 2024 tariff lists these annual fees:

Box size Annual rent
Small SAR 500
Medium SAR 700
Large SAR 1,000

That is one bank and one year, and not every branch has boxes, so ask your own bank. We found no official box tariff for other banks.

How much does that take from your gold?

100 g of 21K is worth 40,886.00 SAR today. On 1 November 2026 it was about SAR 40,886, so a SAR 500 rent was about 1.2% a year, similar to a gold fund's fees. On a smaller holding the percentage rises. Investopedia makes the same point: gold pays no income, so any storage cost comes off your return.

Read the contract

Saudi National Bank publishes its safe deposit box agreement. Before you sign, ask:

  • Are the contents insured? Investopedia warns that US safe deposit boxes aren't insured like deposits, so don't assume either way here.
  • What does a lost key cost? Saudi National Bank's tariff lists SAR 950 to break and replace the lock.
  • Who can access it with you, and what happens if you pay late?

At home: what reduces the risk?

  • A fixed safe beats a drawer or a box that can be carried off.
  • Don't advertise it, and don't post your gold on public accounts.
  • Keep what you wear daily apart from your savings.
  • Home insurance: Investopedia suggests considering a policy for gold kept at home, though it writes for the US market. In Saudi Arabia, ask your insurer in writing whether the policy covers gold and jewellery, up to what amount, and what proof it needs.

Build a proof file

Wherever you keep it:

  1. Photograph each piece from two sides, with the hallmark.
  2. Keep the invoices as photos, away from the gold.
  3. Note the weight and karat of each piece.
  4. Update the value once a year.

The Dhahabi iPhone app has a free wallet where you can keep your pieces with photos and see their value at today's price. This file helps when you sell and when you travel, because the invoice proves the value.

Gold in a bank still carries zakat

Where you keep it doesn't change zakat. Gold held as savings is subject to it once it reaches the nisab and a Hijri year passes, at home or in a box. See how to calculate zakat on gold.

Rather not store gold at all?

Gold funds hold the gold for you for a fee, though you don't own a bar in your hand.
